My Parents won't let me have a cow

    Don't worry, don't beg.

Many of our young people come from suburban homes where there is no place to keep a cow. Their parents want to support their children, but the cost of upkeep at a boarding stable that may or may not allow cattle, the drive time with an already busy schedule, and the over all lack of knowledge keeps many young people from fulfilling their dreams of being a REAL cowgirl.

    Here are some suggestions.

Call your local 4-H extension office. Most 4-H programs have a share a calf class. This allows you to care for and visit a calf while not having to buy one. You not only get the 4-H experience with other young people that are interested cattle. They also may have more experience and be able to help you. After the show you sell the calf and split the money with the owner of the calf.

Dairy farms could always use help. They always have calves to feed and most are willing to take in free labor and spend the time training you. Offer to volunteer at a dairy one or two days a week. This will also show your parents you won't loose interest and that you are willing to gain knowledge.

www.ridingsteers.com has a wonderful message board with a pretty nice Young Riders group. Here you can talk to others your age and share experiences.

I know you were wanting me to give you the magic key to how to talk your parents into this. I can't do that. What I can do is help you out and find ways for you to be around cattle until that magical day you get your own home, your own job and you can buy your own calf.
