    About me, Jauson

I was born in 1964, have lived on and owned One Sky Ranch since 1991. I started throwing kisses to horses as we drove past them long before I ever got out of my booster seat. I even thought I would grow up to marry my pony and have a litter of puppies. I was devastated when my cousin told me why and how that couldn't happen. No matter, in a way I did grow up to marry my animals. They have been more a part of who and what Im then any other part of my life. I have turned down everything from teaching at universities, to marriage, just to stay on the ranch. Nothing seems as important as the freedom and self expression I have here. Every animal I work with teaches me more about myself and how to deal with others in my life, not just the 4 leggeds. The sun raise always seems prettier with out anything between me and the colors in the sky. I don't mind the 50 mile round trip to shop.

Somewhere around 1999 I was badly injured and lost the ability to walk, or even know when I had to pee. I felt more suicidal at that point in time than I have ever come close to being.  A friend taught me to make saddles and leather work so I had a "sit down job" as my Grandmother used to call them. It didn't matter, I couldn't ride. Then one day a friend called me from my driveway on his cell phone and told me he had put a starved pregnant Longhorn cow in my corral. There was a walker waiting on the back porch and She needed to eat and drink. It was October. No time for any animal to be thin in this climate. Long story short, She had a calf come spring, I sold her and paid Dale for the cow. The next year she gave birth to Freedom and the Riding Steer legacy was born. I had trained Elk, Bison and cattle before then, but he was the first I owned and never had to say good bye to. Since then many cattle have come and gone. I have set up a breeding program focusing on temperament. Unlike Rodeo bulls, I breed the buck out. My calves don't kick. I have also created a special feed that helps joints and bones rather than fat and meat. And Yes, they taught me to walk again.

This year Im ready to invite the public into my home. For the first time I will allow over night stays by students. I know we will all have a great time!
